I was recently talking with one of the gardeners/neighbors at the community garden by Laguna Honda/7th Ave./Plaza St. about the trails that go up from that area towards Mt. Sutro. I love the work that we have done so far, and I think that others probably agree that the ideal would be to visit hidden areas rather than criss-crossing the same areas with trails.
There are a lot of signs announcing the imminent procecution of anyone trespassing in that area, which I had assumed was a…

A few months ago, I was sitting in a booth at the Manor Coffee Shop on West Portal Ave, holding down the table while my partner wandered off to the window to show our granddaughter the rain pouring down outside. The Manor is a great place for breakfast and lunch, and it's a marvelous diner, with its checker-tiled floors, old wooden booths, stools by the counter, and friendly waitresses. The walls are bedecked with old photos of the neighborhood, including the construction of the Twin Peaks…

WOW, my voice is raspy after 9 hours of engaging our Cole Valley and Haight neighbors at the Sutro Stewards booth. I'm always surprised how much enthusiasm our program receives from those who frequent the Mount Sutro trails. This year we shared our vision of a broader interconnected open space area accessed via recreational trail corridors spreading across Twin Peaks to Glen Canyon. Apparently THIS is where people want to see us go!

Just under two weeks before the ground breaking of the Lower Interior Greenbelt trail begins. After much emotion and controversy it is nice to see a step forward with this project. Estimates are 6-9 months of steady work to get the trail open at both ends. Although this seems like an eternity from a recreational perspective, it is nothing compared to the two years spent introducing the idea to SFRPD and the community.
What started as a longshot a few years ago, has now turned into one of…

We had a fine workday on Sutro this past Saturday. The trail crew was small but motivated and we managed to rehab a significant section of the Fairy Gates Trail, which is cut into a fairly steep hillside. Over time the trail has 'drifted' downslope, and our focus was re-establishing the original trail grade, which ended up involving a lot of rock hammering. A good workout, and you could really see the progress at day's end. Pretty darn gratifying!
On a personal note, I've…

We had a nice size turnout for the September 4th volunteer day. You can see the results of the volunteer effort as you walk along the Fairy Gates Trail where the trail crew worked and at the top of the NIKE road where the habitat crew moved a mountain of mulch for another permaculture project. Lila's got a lot of great photos… Continue

If you made it this far I'm pleased! This has been a work in progress for months now, developing a site for all Stewards and volunteer contributors to our wonderful open space efforts. If you've been a part of this 4 year adventure you've seen some remarkable progress and you can probibaly point to something you've personally accomplished! That is truly part of the reward and experience of participating.
I hope you can join us on Saturday September 4th to celebrate 4 years of…
