ORIGINAL SUTRO MANAGEMENT PLAN

If you want a better understanding of what the 1,000+ page DEIR responds to, please take a look at the 80 page UCSF Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve Management Plan. This is the document that has guided the process of creating the trail network (SF's first multi-use trails), Rotary Meadow and numerous restoration sites, and the Sutro Stewards.…

Hello Sutro Stewards!

Hi everyone!

I wanted to introduce myself to the group.  I just finished yet another wonderfully refreshing hike through Mt. Sutro, although this time, I decided to get more actively involved in the important work of the Sutro Stewards, starting by creating a personal profile on this website.  :)  I'd love to help preserve, protect and maintain this wonderful piece of nature in the middle of San Francisco and look forward to getting more involved.  From what I've learned, Mt.…

First ride down Historic

Had a blast with my six year old son.  Rode downhill on Historic Tr.  Had to stop for some workers keeping the trail in its awesome condition.  Amazing area and looking forward to riding more and also volunteering.

The Quarry Road Trail, An Impressive Effort

Dawn broke on Saturday November 5th with the most beautiful blood red sky behind a still dark Mount Sutro. I regarded this as a good omen for a very challanging day of stewardship that had been in the making for several months. The Sutro Stewards hosted the Bay Area Ridge Trail (BART)/REI service day for the first time. We set the bar (rock bar if you will) very high and capped registration for the event at 100, making this our largest event ever. We reached that goal with a few days to…

New photos coming soon...

Originally planned to just walk Mount Sutro’s new Lower Historic Trail once today – the opposite way from my first trip last week. Started up Farnsworth Lane (149 steps – see first pic) and the few very…

The Tale of the Sutro Stewards by Richard Karevoll

Published in the SF State Xpress [magazine]

At least sixty people congregate in a parking lot hidden in the woods.  Young, old, hip, plain, flannels, jeans,…

The Sutro Stewards hosted a group of stewardship volunteers from Clif Bar on Wednesday the 16th.

We performed habitat and trail work on the Fairy Gates and Edgewood trail intersection area. Cape and English ivy, nightshade and other assorted weeds were removed and the trail corridor was pruned. We also…

MISSING MEADOW

Don't be alarmed if you pass through Rotary Meadow and find a patch of bare soil in one small area. The meadow is being replanted this winter with several new species of grasses and plants which are not already found within the garden area. This is part of the intent of the original demonstration area, to determine what succeeds and what doesn't. The area where the work is taking place was one of the lowest performing of the areas planted in 2004. Now six years after the original planting,…

New Map shows Trails in San Francisco

The Walker's Map of San Francisco is a great new map by Sutro Steward's cartographer, Ben Pease, who has been exploring San Francisco for more than 3 decades. This large-format topographic map shows all the City's neighborhoods, parks, and trails.

The north half extends from Golden Gate Park and Civic Center north to Angel Island and the Marin Headlands; the south…

Thursday Night Trailwork

Dan, Chris, Mike and I spent a few hours at the intersection of the North Ridge and Mystery trails last night working on some drainage issues. We are currently experiencing the worst severe winter conditions the area has seen since last winters heavy rain. The results are muddy, boggy and slippery conditions in areas on the west side of Sutro. The remedy is to remove buildup along the outer edges of the trails to let the water move off the trails.
