Meet at the Aldea Community Center, 155 Johnstone Dr at 8:00 AM. The UCSF Mount Sutro Open Space Preserve is a 61-acre remnant of more than 2000 acres of eucalyptus trees planted by Adolf Sutro. UCSF has instituted a long term management plan for the OSP with the initial phase focused on removing dead and dying trees to improve fire safety. Some tree replacement planting is evident, and the Sutro Stewards are maintaining the native plantings at the summit meadow and utilizing openings along trails for further conservation planting. UCSF has commissioned GGAS to do a survey of bird and butterfly populations. The survey is in it's second year.
We’ll walk about two miles, with significant climbing on mostly well-graded trails with some rocky spots and exposed roots (sutrostewards.org/trail-map). We’ll look and listen for birds, expecting resident birds and summer breeders, along with this year's juveniles that may have confusing plumage and songs. Early migrants may have joined the summer mix.
Heavy fog and strong wind cancels. Please contact Pat Greene, pjgreene@sonic.net for last minute updates or changes.
This trip is free but advance registration is required. Click here to register.
Registration opens August 14 and closes August 26. There is no limit on number of participants.
Directions to the start: Park on Clarendon or Dellbrook as close to the Johnstone intersection as possible, then hike a short distance up Johnstone Dr. to the UCSF Aldea Center on your left (across from the intersection of Medical Center Way on the right). Allow ~10 min to park and walk to the meeting place. UCSF can be reached by public transit: N Judah light rail, and 43, 6 and 66 buses. The Aldea Center is a significant uphill climb from the transit stops. There is a restroom at Aldea.
