The large trees in this part of the forest give it a sheltering, cathedral-
like feel and everything is a shade of green, except for the contrast of
occasional interesting rock exposed on the slope.
This trail crosses the wettest part of Mt. Sutro Forest. Occasionally it’s
so wet you can hear the dripping (and you may yearn for your raincoat).
The reason? The wet fog hits this part of the mountain first as it makes
its way from the Pacific Ocean and deposits a lot of its moisture. Watch
your footing, as the trail can be slick and there are also exposed roots.
After perhaps a quarter mile the historic trail is blocked (to allow for
slope repair from the storms of 2022/23) and you follow a temporary
detour down to and across Medical Center Way. Then follow the
sidewalk west for almost a quarter of a mile, and arrive near your
starting point, the junction of the Edgewood and Lower Historic trails.
From here you have a variety of exit trails to choose from. You’ve
completed the loop of Mt. Sutro.
Remember to lace up your tennis shoes and come back often!
